A Spanish treasure ship is driven by a hurricane onto the rocky shoreline of Elbow Cay in September of 1566. Few of the crew survive, but they manage to salvage most of the treasure and bury it on the island, leaving a clue to its location in a chest placed in the boughs of a young mangrove tree. Four hundred forty years later, Jesse McDermitt and his friends solve the riddle that was hidden inside a chest found encased in the now-ancient mangrove. When the head of the Miami-based Croatian mob learns about the treasure he goes to great lengths and expense, in an attempt to relieve Jesse and his friends of the riches. A demented, hyper-sexed island woman also wants it for her own, as does a hot-shot Miami attorney and his son, who is married to Jesse's estranged daughter. As the body count grows, will the crew of Gaspar's Revenge find the treasure or become one of the island's statistics?
Fallen Mangrove Jessie McDermitt Series Volume 5 (Audible Audio Edition) Wayne Stinnett Nick Sullivan Down Island Press Books
I loved the previous Jesse McDermitt series books. This next book in the series missed the mark a bit for me. I had two major issues with it. One is that it takes coincidence to an extreme level. The second is that it skipped over much of the more intimate and character building parts that made the other books so great while at the same time devoting too much time to other viewpoints of the villains who we care little about. Spoilers may follow....

So all of a sudden Jesse's daughter shows up. He has not seen her since she was 5 months old... and within pages she is one of the gang. This relationship and renewal should have taken a quarter of the book at a minimum! So much history, explanations and questions... glossed over with a paragraph of "we spent the evening talking". Then... on the treasure hunt. The climax and find takes only a few pages. Weak.
There are reasons and formula with which the first four books are so enjoyable. This fifth book seems to skip much of that. I hope the next one book regains the trail which this one lost.

Fallen Mangrove Jessie McDermitt Series Volume 5 (Audible Audio Edition) Wayne Stinnett Nick Sullivan Down Island Press Books Reviews
I've been living in Jesse McDermitt's world for two days having read the books in the series through "Fallen Mangrove." I'm thoroughly enjoying them, and while the basic plot lines are similar and the characters fairly simple, each novel is filled with life as it happens. The setting of the Florida Keys is gorgeous, and Mr. Stinnett's description lights up my memory and imagination. Delightful, scary, gorgeous, and emotionally and visually stimulating, I encourage you to enjoy them.
Great escapism read. Good character development, with fun engaging personalities. Storyline consists of retired Marine/Seal living in the keys of Florida. Along with an old bunk mate who owns the local watering hole. Various opportunities and challenges have presented themselves from Book One through the series. Not wanting to give away the storyline, I will just say the main character picks up new friends with each opportunity. The key; the stories are believable, fun, with excitement and interesting.
Once I complete a book, I am immediately looking for the next in the series to read. I personally prefer reading in the order the author wrote them. The storyline and characters remind me of the similiar spirit of SPENSER by Robert Parker or REACHER by Lee Childs.
If you have ever spent time in the Keys and Bahamas, you'll know these wonderful books are based in fact and intimate knowledge of the places he takes you. Channels, compass headings, remote keys, and local places are accurately described. I think anyone, even landlubbers, would enjoy these books, but island folk, fishermen, divers, gun owners and generally adventurous sorts will LOVE them, and probably learn stuff you didn't know, or forgot.
I'm not a native of Florida, but having lived there for over 40 years I enjoy Wayne's description of south Florida and the Keys. The Keys are not a location, they are a way of life. His descriptions of the Keys, the Gulf are spot on and he does his best to lay out the beauty to the reader. His plots are not out of the realm of possibility and his explanations of the situations leaves the reader ready to turn the page and find out what happens next. While some scenes appear to be headed to an expected ending, he throws in an a completely different light. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
Fallen Mangrove is by far the best book in the Jesse McDermitt series to date. The format here is similar to Clive Cussler and his Dirk Pitt adventures at sea...this story begins in the 15th century and then moves to present time with Jesse and company. Somebody had double-crossed Jesse and planted a bug on his boat several weeks earlier, and unknowingly, the team continues working diligently on board to decipher a cryptic coconut that has passed through several generations of Doc's family. The third party, listening in to these discussions, pull out all the stops when it is discovered that the writing on the coconut is a secret riddle leading to millions of dollars of buried treasure. Now the race begins!
Mr. Stinnett keeps readers on the edge of their seats as the story unfolds...there are pretty women, hired killers, gun battles, a practicing witch in the black arts with a briefcase full of secret potions, innocents die, and Jesse's two estranged daughters suddenly show up after many years; one is a free spirit and the other married to a lawyer in Miami, pregnant with Jesse's first grandchild due very soon. Will Jesse change his ways now that his daughters are back in his life? Team members are drugged and double-crossed - all is not what it seems. Is there actually buried treasure? what kind of ties does Jesse's pregnant daughter have with the villains in the story? You'll have to read the story for these answers!
Great job Wayne! Looking forward to the next book in the series which is due out next month!

I should have read more carefully, because Fallen Mangrove has little to do with historical fiction apart from the first chapter or so. It’s actually a full blown action thriller that has a bit of a Rambo/Die Hard feeling going on. I’m not saying that’s necessarily a bad thing and I’m sure the right person would probably love this book. In fact, I think this is one of those cases where the problem most likely is me, and not the book… So I’m going to give Fallen Mangrove the benefit of the doubt. This fourth book in the Jesse McDermitt series can be read as a stand-alone; I’ve done so myself and only a few small background facts about the characters seem to be missing. It’s without doubt an action-packed story, but the many technical details did distract from the main plot and the ending felt a bit ‘weak’ after so many action scenes. I didn’t really find the plot credible either… But like I said, the right person would probably really enjoy this read.
