Vanguard is a fantasy, coming-of-age action adventure story about a naïve boy named Wajue. When tragedy strikes his peaceful world, leaving him all alone in the unforgiving land of Bovatha, a place he never knew existed; it forces him to make tough choices. A mysterious woman, free-will, fate, deceit, greed, and the indomitable adolescent desire to explore the new world are just a few of the challenges that overwhelm him. Peculiar plot twists, exciting battles, and an abundance of bizarre characters all come to life in this captivating tale about how a boy becomes a man and overcomes adversity.

Vanguard is a remastered edition from the book, Casualties of Truth, and also from the first 18 chapters of the book, Warfolkan. The story has not changed, just the title. Vanguard is now the first book of the trilogy. Warfolkan will be the second book and Sagacity the third, both are scheduled to be released soon.

I hate that Amazon makes us pick specific words to describe a complex tale such as this. Perhaps that was the reason my first review of this book did not get posted. I refused to pick their 'chosen' words. I hate for folks to put words in my mouth. Well, enough raving against Amazon, let me tell you what I really thought about this book.

In whole this is a 'coming of age' book, but it is so much more. We, as readers, are introduced to a world that has never been written about in the past. This is not a medieval setting, not a traditional fantasy. This is a journey for the main character, Wajue, as he quests for answers to life and in particular his place in the world. There are wizards, dragons, magic, strong women characters, and scenes of both love and strike, battles and peace.

The author has a very distinctive style where he breaks through the 4th wall and talks to his audience as a narrator in italics to explain a place, tradition of the culture he is building, or historical fact. This gives the feel of a documentary at times.

I marked this as 'slow paced' because Wajue is on a journey of discovery and you take every step with him. So it is much like you are at his side all the way. I marked mood as 'dark' because much of his adventures are a struggle for survival.

I would liked to have seen it end differently. I like happy endings, but I understand that this is a trilogy so perhaps in the next book my wishes will come true and more of my questions will be answered.

Vanguard Broke Fiction Book 1 edition by James Kafka Lisa Mclaren Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Great coming of age tale with a well developed magical land to explore. Each time I thought I knew where the story was headed, I was suprised by another twist or detour. I love the themes of growing up, the role of family and tradition, and adventure. There is even some romance along the way. Highly recommended for my fellow fantasy readers.
