I love Karen Hawkins' historicals! And I understand that in today's world, romance writers must write quickly to provide their audience and publisher with books. But this is a case when someone should have slowed down and run the book through one final edit.

Though we have a marvelous, spunky heroine in Mary, the book contains flaws that kept pulling me out of the story. First and foremost, the timeline is severely messed up. First they have two days until their drop-dead, people-may-die deadline, then they have five, then the next day the hero reminisces about the day before... which was actually three days before. That kind of thing. By the end of the book the people in it don't seem to realize they've greatly missed their deadline. Plus we have the basic season the book is set in, in which we have at least three ice storms taking place in mid to late May.

All this would take just a few minutes to fix at manuscript stage. Why wasn't it?

Also, there's an important secondary character who completely disappears in the final quarter of the book without explanation. Her presence would have screwed up the climax, but still--one paragraph, even one sentence explaining that she'd run off with a man (with perhaps another couple sentences later as people note her absence) would not have been that hard to include and would have fit the situation.

The bit at the end about the fake you-know-what made a previous partial scene where the person who knew about it was examining the fake, searching for clues, make no sense. I have a feeling the author was taking a different road in her plot that she later decided against. And again, this would have been a very easy fix: just leave out that previous bit.

There were a couple other places where I sat back and said, "Huh?" but as I mentioned before, the character of Mary is captivating enough to keep me reading. I do hope someone reprints this book WITH these simple changes made so I may buy that, reread and enjoy the story. That book would score a very solid four stars!

One Night in Scotland The Hurst Amulet Karen Hawkins 9781439175897 Books Reviews

This book had a lot of potential. I was looking forward to reading something that was more than a historical romance, and it delivers in that regard. However there's too much else where it fails. Too much time is spent on Mary and Angus arguing. It became tedious and it did nothing to further the characters or the plot. It also made it difficult to believe that Mary could find any redeeming qualities in him, let alone enough for her to begin to desire him. On the "romance" front, I can only conclude that Angus is the world's worst lover. All in all, this book left me feeling like Mary must have felt after their night together disappointed.
There is certainly nothing better than curling up with a Karen Hawkins' Scottish hottie on at night. Daytime too for that matter...
Good story, even though we have all read something along the same lines. I felt that there could have been more depth.
This installment in the Hurst Amulet series reminded me a lot of Beauty and the Beast (one of my favorite tales.) I enjoyed the characters and Ms. Hawkins always has a way with witty dialog and funny scenes. The cast was small in this one, with the whole story being set in Earl of Erroll's castle. It was a quick and enjoyable read with the only thing about it I did not like was the abrupt ending and cliffhanger which makes me want the next book in the series.. now. But I am impatient like that. All in all, this was a lovely book to curl up with.
Good story. Made me laugh. I liked the characters and the plot and hope to see more of family from previous stories come to visit.
Three determined people. One determined to find adventure after a lifetime of safe living. Another determined to punish themselves with a lifetime of grief and the third determined to... Well, buy the book and find out for yourselves. If you're a Karen Hawkins fan, trust me, you won't be disappointed.
I, like all the other reviewers, love Karen Hawkins and regency romances. This one was a good read with interesting characters and good premise for plot, but it seems to have lost me towards the end. I devoured this book in one night, entertained by the battle of wills between the stubborn Angus and captivating Mary, but there were some holes in the story that seemed to screw up the great start. Her maid just disappears... She was mysteriously late to help, and apparently decided to dissapear completely. It wouldn't have been such a noticeable loss if she hadn't have been so predominate in the first half of the novel, with the dozens of mentions to her body and her non-stop complaining. A simple sentence of explanation could have been nice. After Angus reappears with Mary towards the very end, all of those nicely developed plot lines seemed to have been just thrown together, as if the author was impaitent to finish the novel for a deadline. Aside from the rushed ending and a disappering secondary character, I enjoyed the book, but it won't be on the keeper shelf.
